Performance Tax call to action
As you probably know, the Performance Tax issue is heating up and has passed the House Judiciary Committee. While Congressman Hodes has committed to levying this tax on broadcasters, Congresswoman Shea-Porter has supported us and signed on to H. Con. Res. 49 – the Local Radio Freedom Act. Both of our Senators, however, are uncommitted. Both have expressed that they support broadcasters to the Association during our recent visit to Washington DC – we would like to see their names on the Senate bill that would prevent these crippling fees from being imposed on radio stations.
In Maryland, a talk show host asked callers to weigh in with Elijah Cummings (MD-7) office regarding the performance tax. His office received 3,000 calls Wednesday morning and he immediately signed onto the performance tax resolution.
If possible, please use your airwaves to fight to save them. Tell your listeners through your talk format, DJs or PSAs how this will affect their favorite station. Ask them to contact Senators Shaheen and Gregg (perhaps provide their contact information) and ask for their support on S Con. Res. 14 – the Local Radio Freedom Act. And publicly thank Congresswoman Shea-Porter for signing onto the bill to help protect and preserve radio.
